Michael Van Auken
1942-
Carvings

Information:
Van Aucken came from a working class family where "art school was just not acceptable." His uncle gave Michael a carving set and paints as a gift, but these were immediately put away as too good to use. Much to his surprise, when he reached 40, his mother gave him the still untouched set.
He is married to an artist and lives in the middle of 64 acres, and works full time in a video store. From a single piece of wood, he carves images of women, often dancers.
He has recently started making more than one figure, still from a single branch of a tree.
The largest peice he has ever done os a 7 ft sculpture of Josephine Baker. He is not prolific in his work, as he must work fulltime to earn a living. He does sell his work, thought. He does not want visitors without a prior appointment
