Woodville, GA
Garden of Eden's United Christian Church's Training Center for All Churches - Reverend John D. Ruth

1914-1995
Religious/spiritual environment

Information:

"Ruth, a college graduate, worked as a musician in Athens Georgia, until 1954, when he had a visionary experience in which, he claims, God came to him and stated, "John D. Ruth will work." Ruth then dedicated his life to God and to teaching the word of the Bible. Returning to Woodville, he became the pastor of the community Pentecostal Church. He also began work on the sculptural environment he called the Bible Garden.

Ruth's twenty-acre garden was filled with statues and painting. Constructed from cement, wood panels, paper-maché, and various found objects, the pieces were painted and covered with messages that illustrated stories and teachings from the Bible. The Bible Garden attracted visitors from all over the United States. Despite his popularity, Ruth never sold his art. After he died, the Bible Garden was dismantled.
