"Growing up in Yazzo City, Mohammed started making art at the age of 5, when he and his brother created drawings and comic books fro themselves and friends. He bagan selling his work in 1969. At the time he was also employed as a construction worker and lived in various places, including Annapolis, Maryland, and Memphis Tennessee. After he returned to Yazoo City in 1977, he was blinded by a shotgun blast to the face.
Early in his career, Mohammed worked primarily as a painter. After losing his eyesight, he concentrated on sculptural work. Using a single piece of wood, he carves human figures, snakes, and various other animals. He also carves walking sticks and staffs. His work is now represented by a number of galleries and can be found in the permanent holdings of several museums in the southern United States.
