Kilmarnock, VA
Airfield (Airplane Machine Shop Co.) - Leslie "Airplane" Payne

1907-1981
Sculptures - airplanes

Information:

An 1918 air show in Virginia's Northcumberland County was of singular importance for the rest of Leslie Payne's life. In his 40s, he began to fabricate airplanes at his small frame house in Lillian, VA. These were not model planes, but 12 and 16 foot metal replicas. It is said that he actually tried fly one, but when it failed to lift off, he drove it down the highways until chased off by a local sheriff.
