La Tour de l'Apocalypse (The Tower of the Apocalypse) - Robert Garcet
unknown
Apocalyptic art
|
|
Information:
"Inspired by the Book of Revelations, Robert Garcet, a former quarryman, built his seven-storey, 20-metre tower (1948-1963) as a monument to peace. Constructed with the help of family and friends, its external walls are faced with flint."
"Huge winged sculptures representing the four Evangelists stand menacingly at the corners of the summit. Beneath the tower lie 800 metres of disused flint mining tunnels, which have become Garcet's underground museum, a repository for his artefacts and paintings. Garcet has evolved his own theory of history, believing that a civilisation existed 70 million years ago and that flints are its sculptures."
