"The art lover and retired clerk Josef Portman, a great admirer of the artist Josef Váchal, commissioned him to cover the inner walls of his house near Prague with murals. Portman planned to open the building as a museum dedicated to Váchal's work, but was unable to arrange this. In 1991, the Prague publishing house Paseka purchased the house and extensively restored the interior, saving Váchal's paintings. 70 years after the museum was first planned, it finally opened its doors."
"Váchal began his work in 1920, painting a ceiling and a wardrobe. The following year, he created further decorations in carved wood and paint. In 1924 he returned, and in a ten day creative burst painted almost all the rest of the house. Portman was unable to persuade Váchal to return and embellish his work with carvings; the artist was now involved in writing "Blood Novel", which was published by Paseka in 1990.
