Cornhill-on-Tweed, Northcumberland,
The Cement Menagerie - John Fairnington and James Beveridge

Fairnington ?-1981
Concrete environment

Information:

Branxton, Cornhill-on-Tweed, Northumberland, England

"The Cement Menagerie in Northumberland was begun in 1962 by retired joiner John Fairnington to amuse his handicapped son. Fairnington drew up the plans, which were then executed by another pensioner, James Beveridge. The sculptures were moulded in galvanized wire netting, stuffed with paper, and then cemented over and painted."

"As well as the magnificent elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, rams and camels, this enchanting garden has life-size models of Winston Churchill, Lawrence of Arabia and a knight in armor. The garden is laid out with paths, fountains and a viewing platform. When his son died in 1971, John Fairnington added a Memory Corner in his honour."
