From 1948, visions came to him at night, inspiring him to fill his house in Aquitaine with painted clay sculptures. Dominated by monsters and supernatural images, his works include a Yeti, Cro-Magnon man, reptiles, and saints. Barret claimed to have met a Martian, whom he immortalised in clay, while his visions of God the Father and Christ led to tableaux of holy figures, including the Holy Family, Christ surrounded by children, and the bearded, robed figure of God. The assembled figures and groups, often decked out in fur and feathers, have an eerie frozen quality.
