Charles D. "Charlie" Brown

1949-
Pottery - face jugs

Information:

The Brown family continues their tradition of digging all their clay from the same pit Grandpa found many years ago. Charles and his sons turn all of the pottery while Jeannette finishes, glazes, and fires all the wares. Much of the original machinery is still in operation. Grandpa Davis's hand built kiln is on display along with his largest hand turned vase, measuring 6'2" tall.

Collectors know the Browns as one of the oldest traditional face jug producing families left in America. While Grandpa's face jugs originally sold for $2.50 each, one recently sold for $65,000. Brown's Pottery is noted worldwide and ships to Russia, Japan, Australia and Europe. Their work is displayed at prominent locations such as the Smithsonian Institute, the Mint, Rockefeller Museum, Chrysler Museum and the American Museum of Folk Art. Their work is recognized by the Foxfire Books as well as many trade publications.

Charles Brown was one of two chosen to represent the U.S. at the Montreal Exposition of "Man and His World." He is noted for his wonderful turning and design work, his wonderful knowledge of glazing, and his participation in the Montreal Exposition.
