Information:
A potter who used clay found locally in the Appalachian hills fired and colored with bark, leaves or mud, her work had a captivating quality with a timeless appeal. Her works, frequently depicting local or family characters from her memory, reflected the flowing sensibilities of the sculpture of the 1940's, while having a pre-Columbian quality. Perhaps these imposing clay sculptures and vessels can best be described as essayist and photographer Jonathan Williams characterizes Georgia Blizzard as herself: Part American-Indian, part Celtic and part William Blake.
Georgia Blizzard clay sculptures are enigmatic and complex. She produced less than 100 examples a year that survive the challenges of the Appalachian mountain winters and the vagaries of the artist's very basic firing and coloring process. As she was a potter for over twenty years, there was a substantial body of work available, although difficult to find. Her work is keenly sought after and is in several private and museum collections in America and abroad.
