Information:
The only "steady job" Tony Joe Salvatore ever had was, as he says, "painting in the service of the Lord." His creative activity is known to have increased substantially after his automobile accident in 1973. He used a vivid palette with many greens and blues. He layered wax and paint in order to build up the surface of the work so that it appeared almost translucent; light seems to come from within. Tony Joe’s mystical religious and biblical illustrations are an important contribution to contemporary folk art. His quiet messages contrast with other biblical artists of the twentieth century, and hi technical proficiency sets him apart as a skilled colorist and illustrator. The paintings of Salvatore have found an interested audience among discriminating scholars in the field. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of American Folk Art and the Akron Museum.
