Information:
Richvald near Bardejov, Slovakia Andrej Hankovsky came from a peasant family and was a farmer himself. He started woodcarving only when he was older. His work partly followed the folk tradition but he was not afraid of disrupting the tradition through his highly individualized expression, marked by authentic spontaneity, earthly power, and a rather specific humour.
His originality is revealed in his angular colour figurines portraying the village types he knew so well and in the spontaneous, inventive, painted wood reliefs. Their motifs were taken from the village life, from religion - the latter topics were treated in an original way (Expulsion from Paradise) and as echoes of official art (statesmen's portraits).
