Information:
"Miles Carpenter was born in Pennsylvania in 1889 but moved to Waverly, Virginia as a child. He worked in a sawmill and after retiring operated an icehouse. He carved a little before retirement, but took up carving seriously after his wife died in 1966. He made "root monsters" and humorous carvings of human figures, many of which he painted in latex house paint. His work may be seen in a number of publications and museums. The Miles B. Carpenter Home and Museum in Waverly, Virginia, has about sixty pieces of his work on display. His work is also included in the National Museum of American Art Smithsonian Institution and the New Orleans Museum of Art. He was included in the exhibition "Folk Art: The Common Wealth of Virginia". "
