Robyn "The Beaver" Beverland

1957-1998
Painting (oil or water-based)

Information:

Robyn "The Beaver" Beverland lived in Florida in a house next door to his parents. He enjoyed helping his parents in their yard and even more he enjoyed the pleasure he gave to people with his paintings. The Beaver had a very rare disease called Wolfrand Syndrome, which had left him blind in one eye and only partially sighted in the other. He also had diabetes and a mild case of cerebral palsy. Yet he was a cheerful person whose world was his family, his Bible, and his art.

He painted "from his own mind's experiences" and used house paint and plywood or cardboard. One of his most often repeated images was one of several faces of different colors called "We Are All One". After several bouts with pneumonia, "The Beaver" spent his last months on a respirator and died August 20, 1998. His work is in the permanent collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art.
