Alexander (aka Ernst Herbeck)

1920-1991
Written word

Information:

Since he was 26 - with the exception of one year - Ernst Herbeck was permanently institutionalized, suffering from the feeling that other people or animals were entering his body.

In the beginning of the 1960s, a Professor Navratil incited Herbeck to compose poems, providing him with one word that triggered free associations. According to Navratil, Herbeck’s poems could be either considered as the "expression of schizophrenic transformation of language" or "creation of language with unusual lyrical qualities." In 1977 German publishing house Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag published the entire poetic production by Ernst Herbeck, under the title Alexanders poetische Texte (Alexander’s Poetical Texts). Since then Herbeck’s poems have been recited on radio, TV, theater dramas were written based on his personality.
