1907-1984
Sculptures
|
|
Information:
Inez Marshall started carving Kansas limestone in the late 1930s while recuperating from an accident. Her prior occupations included auto mechanic, truck driver, and traveling evangelist. She carved in stone for over 50 years. The limestone she used was quarried from the Jewell and Osborne counties. Some of the rock sculptures weigh 700-1,500 pounds.
Inez had a stroke, lapsed into a coma, and died in 1984 at the age of 77. Her sculptures and other assets were sold a auction to cover medical expenses.
Her Continental Sculpture Hall may be gone, but Marshall’s 95 sculptures are now on display at the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas, Kansas. They include animals, politicians, scenes from a small-town life, a 1/5 scale Model T, and the wheel and battery of an uncompleted full-size Harley Davidson motorcycle.
