"Friends" Sculpture Garden - Ida Mae Kingsbury

1919-1989
Sculpture environment

Information:

Ida Kingsbury was without friends when her husband Robert died in 1971 so she created her own - hundreds of them. They overflowed her home and filled the yard and when there was no room left, Ida began sleeping in her car.

After her death "The Friends of Ida Kingsbury" saved her work from being sent to the city dump by her step-daughters. They were not, however, able to raise enough money to build a site for them. Ida's "friends" were put in storage until a place could be built to display them. A core collection is currently being cared for by The Orange Show Foundation. Other "friends" have been offered for sale, with part of the proceeds going to support care of the core collection.

Update, July 2005: The Ida Kingsbury collection will be going to Kansas Grassroots Art Center in Lucas as part of their permanent exhibit. My wife and I have been taking care of this work for the past 15 years. Last year, the Orange Show formally declined to pursue it. I sent letters to about 20 potential homes in museums etc. The KGAC will make an excellent home for this body of work. We expect the formal move to happen within the next 12 to 18 months. (Courtesy of Tom LaFaver) This environment no longer exists but individual pieces were salvaged and on display at the Kansas Grassroot Art Center. For tour info, contact Grassroots Art Center, 213 South Main Street, P.O. Box 304, Lucas, KS 67648, Tel: (785) 525-6118
