Information:
"A wooden garden of flowers, faces, and carousels more than a house high-this is the garden of Romano Gabriel in Eureka, California. Gabriel was a gardener who came from Italy in 1913, but "Eureka is bad place for flowers," he told Jan Wampler, author of the book, All Their Own."
"So he built his own garden out of a longing for the exuberance of Italian flora and with the wood from fruit crates. He did so for thirty years until the boxes were no longer made of wood. Gabriel died in 1977, and on the day of his death the California State Arts Council designated his garden an important piece of folk art."
Romano Gabriel's Wooden Garden is being restored and preserved at 315 Second Street in Old Town Eureka by the Eureka Heritage Society. Additional images and information can be found on their site.
