Tallapoosa, GA
Leroy "Lee" Almon, Sr.

1938-1997
Bas relief carvings and painting

Information:

This nondenominational evangelical preacher from Tallapoosa, Georgia began carving his inspirational interpretations of spiritual and contemporary secular themes during an apprenticeship with Elijah Pierce, a well-known African-American lay minister and wood carver in Columbus, Ohio. Almon convinced Pierce to take him on as an apprentice after meeting him at the barber shop Pierce ran

Almon's carved bas relief art centered around religious, social and moral themes, drawing each design on a fresh piece of wood.

The quality of Leroy's work never declined as demand increased. He preferred to produce well-made works, rather than churning out a large number of carvings.

His work has been exhibited in a number of museums and galleries, and can be found in a number of publications.
