Wichita, KS
Gino Salerno

unknown
Chainsaw art

Information:

Originally from Portugal, Gino came to Kansas, taught high school biology for awhile, and then started making chainsaw sculptures that were the talk of the town.
Whenever a tree died or was damaged in a storm, Gino was there to create something imaginative from it—Wizard of Oz characters, fairy tale figures, historical heroes . . . . Riverside Park, in particular, was a haven for his work, but vandalism to a number of the pieces caused him to stop displaying them as publicly.
He graduated from medical school since we were there, so his sculpting time may have been adversely impacted, as well.
