Information:
Sulton Rogers was born and raised in Oxford, Mississippi. He was taught wood carving by his father when he was 13.
Sulton Rogers said he carved human figures based on people he met in his travels. His early carvings, he said, were inspired by dreams of the animals he saw in his native Mississippi.
His satirical painted wood carvings are noted primarily for their quirky, sometimes grotesque features. Rogers also created very erotic/sexually explicit pieces, though these are more rare. His artistic interpretation of that subject matter is certainly intriguing and unique.
Sulton worked for a number of years in Syracuse NY before he moved back to his hometown of Oxford. In the meantime he turned out hundreds of wild and wonderful beechwood carvings. He had a thing about snakes, devils, noses that wrapped around and extra breasts; and managed to give his figures an assortment of vivid and articulate facial expressions.
Sulton Rogers died on April 5, 2003 in Oxford.
