Beverly "Gayleen" Aikens

1934-2006
Drawings and stories

Information:

Gayleen Aiken was born in the mid-1930’s in Barre, Vermont. She started painting as a child and has never stopped. Major themes in her work are the large old farmhouse where she grew up, the granite industry, and musical instruments. They are what she calls "my hobbies". She unites these diverse interests in her work by means of a large, imaginary family of "cousins", the Raimbillis.

Gayleen Aiken’s work has been shown in major exhibits of American folk art in the US and Europe, and is in the permanent collection of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Museum of American Folk Art in Williamsburg, Virginia. She was also the subject of Jay Craven’s award winning film "Gayleen", and the recipient of a Vermont Council on the Arts Fellowship. "Moonlight and Music: The Enchanted World of Gayleen Aiken" was published by Harry Abrams, Inc., in September 1997.
