Information:
Built: 1979-present
"Clyde Jones was born on a farm in central North Carolina and now lives in Bynum. As a teenager he moved to a company town to work in a textile mill. Ten years later he began working as a day laborer, construction worker, and part-time pulpwood logger. He injured himself severely with a chainsaw in 1979, and to pass time during his long convalescence he created animal forms from roots and stumps."
"The animals grouped together in his yard form an environment he has named "Haw River Animal Crossing." The house and yard are filled with incredible numbers of creatures. Clyde Jones carves large roots and stumps with a chain saw. Many are further enhanced with housepaint and found objects such as tennis ball "eyes," plastic eyelashes, and artificial flowers in their "hair.""
"They look absolutely great together in his yard, and Jones does not like to sell them. In November 1987, Jones started painting with enamels and oil paints on plywood and paneling. Jones enjoys visitors, especially children. Some of his artwork has found its way into galleries."
