Disneyland North - Dmytro Szylak

Information:
Sometimes the simplest of ideas can get out of hand. I suspect that Dmytro Szylak didn't set out to create "Disneyland North," but then some men are destined for greatness and don't know it. Decorated with plastic bowls and bicycle rims and fan blades and flying ducks, and a lot of brightly colored paint, Dmytro most definitely has the coolest yard on the block. He came here from the Ukraine in 1950, coincidentally the same year that Don was born here, and worked on the line at GM, building transmissions for 30 years. And somewhere along the way, he started building things in his back yard. A spinning thing here, a whirligig there, teeter-totters and helicopters, most of them driven by the wind in some way or another. He liked the Concord airplane so he erected a 12-foot model, painted like everything else, in colors that I like to think of as early fruit salad! When his creations outgrew the backyard he just started building up, over the garage and towards the sky. But what he seems most proud of is a tattered and torn spiral notebook, full of children's names and notes of joy from those who had visited over the years. That's why Dmytro Szylak never stops smiling.
