Dickeyville, WI
Dickeyville Grotto and Holy Ghost Park - Father Matthias Wernerus

1873-1931
Grotto with embedded found objects

Information:

Built: 1924 - 1930

"Inspired by Father Dobberstein's Grotto of the Redemption at West Bend, Father Mathias Wernerus built the Dickeyville Grotto between 1925 and 1930 with the help and involvement of the local community."

"It began as a war memorial, but gradually Wernerus' plans became more ambitious. He used local stone and precious minerals alongside broken glass, tiles, crockery and other bits and pieces donated by his parishioners. The imposing entrance, with its mouth-like opening, leads to an intimate and richly ornamented grotto area. The rear of the structure displays a relief of the Tree of life made of fossilised wood and brightly coloured glass."

"Fantasy Worlds" by Deidi Von Schaewen and John Maizels
